Cuba - Castillo San Severino “Museo Ruta del Esclavo” (Castle of San Severino “The Slave Route Museum")

Typical Renaissance building, it comprises a quadrilateral defensive system, bulwarks in each corner, with maritime and terrestrial defences, and built mainly using slave labour. Its main layout was concluded in 1734. It is the venue of the Slave Route Museum since 1998.

Permanent exhibition devoted to the life and work of Wifredo Lam, installation “Manantial de Raíces” by outstanding painter Nelson Domínguez.  A multimedia system is available.

Objectives of the institution

To disseminate the significance and consequences of slavery and the contributions of the African legacy to Cuban culture.

Heritage documents under its protection

Documents on the slave trade, places of confinement, slave purchases and sales. Death certificates.

The state of conservation of these documents is good. They are used for monthly exhibits, temporary exhibits and research.
