Peru - District of El Carmen (Province of Chincha)

El Carmen received the denomination of Cradle of Afro-Peruvian Folklore. There is a constant artistic activity, by individuals or association promoting the practice of afro-Peruvian music expressions (festejo, zapateo, panalivio, landó, etc.) The local cultural associations and government have obtained the recognition of El Carmen as the stronghold of black musical genre.

In the last few years El Carmen has become consolidated as the hotspot of afro-Peruvian music. In this sense, the work of important artistic families, such as the Ballumbrosio family, should be acknowledged, since they have been able to make afro-Peruvian culture visible in different national and international scenarios.

 

Likewise, El Carmen holds various artistic activities and festivals liked to black culture.

 

Among the local cultural institutions, we may name: The Daniel Comboni afro-Peruvian Cultural Centre, which develops activities to revaluate the afro Peruvian cultural identity, and the Amador Ballumbrosio Cultural Centre, dedicated to the promotion of afro-Peruvian music.
