Cuba - Ingenio El Oriente (El Oriente Sugar Mill)

This sugar mill was built in 1844 by the affluent landowner Francisco Iraola Serrano. At first it was only a treadwheel with horizontal crusher rolls and towards the end of the 1850s a steam engine was added, becoming the largest sugar mill in the jurisdiction, with 128 “caballerías" (aprox. 1717 hectares) of land dedicated to sugar cane and a workforce of 120 slaves.
