Argentina - Manzana Jesuítica (Jesuit Block)

The buildings of the Jesuit Block were built by more than 300 slaves belonging to the Jesuits. Market gardeners, tailors, apothecaries, blacksmiths, carpenters, and lumberjacks, etc. They were also part of the Society´s church choir, where the brotherhood of blacks operated.

Several institutions develop their activities in the Jesuit Block. Within the National University of Cordoba, the History Museum, the General and Historic Archive and the Main Library which are part of The Route of the Slave Cordoba Group.

The site was included in the World Heritage List on 2000. It was declared National Historic Monument in 1940. UNESCO distinguished the Manzana and Estancias Jesuiticas of Cordoba as a Memory Site associated to UNESCO´s Route of the Slave in 2014.

Heritage documents under its protection

The General and Historic Archive of the National University of Cordoba has, under its protection, the documents of temporalities of the Society of Jesus, after their expulsion in 1767. The state of conservation of these documents is excellent. They are used for research.
