On 22 January 2015 the renewed agreement between the government of the Republic of Peru and UNESCO relative to the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Latin America (CRESPIAL) entered into force for a period of six years, from 2014 to 2020.
The procedures adopted for the renewal took place at two levels: national and international. At the national level, the active collaboration in completing all required formalities on the part of the Regional Department of Culture in Cuzco (city where the Centre is based), the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Peru should be highlighted. At the international level, the good offices of UNESCO and the Permanent Delegation of Peru to UNESCO are worthy of note. Likewise the permanent collaboration and participation of the 15 CRESPIAL Member States was and is of great importance.
The decision to postpone the Agreement relative to CRESPIAL is a positive result of UNESCO’s evaluation of the Centre, in charge of an international expert selected by the Organisation through an open call. The evaluation included a visit to the facilities of the Centre and interviews with the members of the work team.
The renewal of the agreement reaffirms the commitment of all participating agents in favour of safeguarding the vast intangible cultural heritage of CRESPIAL Member States.
As part of its work, the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean maintains long-standing relations of cooperation with CRESPIAL and represents UNESCO in its Governing Board.
