3 March 2015/ UNESCO Havana

With the launching of the HeforShe campaign on 5 March, the Dominican Republic will begin its celebration of International Women’s Day, which will run until 7 March.

The campaign was launched in this country at the initiative of the Vice-president of the Republic in collaboration with UN Women, to raise awareness among the population concerning gender equality, promote empowerment and highlight the value of the Dominican woman.

A communiqué issued by the Vice-presidency announced that other activities to be developed to commemorate 8 March will be the talk “Gender approach with a social outlook for the entrepreneurial sphere”, the 2015 Women of Progress national award ceremony, and the Progressing with Solidarity Camp for Young Women, which will count with the support of the Ministry of Sports.

The HeforShe campaign is a solidarity movement for gender equality fostered and promoted by UN Women in order to engage men and boys as defenders and agents of change in the achievement of gender equality and women’s rights. Through mobilization, UN Women seeks to generate awareness of the problem, as well as to activate the co-responsibility that both men and boys have for eliminating any sort of discrimination and violence against women and girls.

The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in the Las Cariátides Hall of the National Palace.
