25 March 2015/ Office of the Historian of the City of Havana

H.E. Ms Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Vice-President of the European Commission, visited the Segundo Cabo Palace in Habana, which today is benefited by a major restoration process funded by this economic and political association of 28 countries.

During an official visit to Cuba that lasted a little over a day, during which the high official had an interview with President Raúl Castro and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, she toured the Palace, guided by Lesbia Menéndez, Cultural Heritage Director of the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana.

Mogherini reviewed the present state of the work, which includes the preparation of the palace for its new function as a meeting point between Cuba and Europe in the fields of culture and heritage. The construction, of high architectural value, was the site of the Cuban Book Institute in its most recent stage.

The restoration and adaptation of the palace for its new functions is the result of the joint efforts of the Delegation of the European Union in Cuba, the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana.

During her visit to Cuba, the EU’s head of foreign affairs informed the press that the bloc and the island have agreed to speed up negotiations to improve their bilateral ties, and expect to achieve the basic objectives for an agreement before the end of the year.

The high official also met with the President of the National Assembly of the People’s Power, Esteban Lazo Hernández; the Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Economy and Planning, Marino Murillo Jorge; and the Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca.
