4 March 2013/ UNESCO Havana/Portal of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean
As part of the systematic monitoring that forms part of the project "Heritage Recovery and Cultural Development in Havana: Segundo Cabo Palace", Mr Herman van Hooff, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, began a new cycle of monthly visits to the works being carried out within this future cultural centre, on behalf of the Organisation.
Accompanied by the technical team from the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana, the UNESCO representative inspected the areas being restored and spoke with specialists and workers. He also confirmed the rigor of the relevant investigations that are being carried out, as well as the progress of the rehabilitation works of this palace. The building dates from the 18th century, and is located within the World Heritage Site 'Old Havana and its fortifications', which was proclaimed in 1982.
Alongside the building's rehabilitation works, other tasks are proceeding, namely the identification and investigation of the cultural contents of the proposed centre, as well as its design and the interactions that are intended to take place there. The site is intended to serve as an intercultural link in Havana, to contribute to the understanding of Cuba within Europe and vice versa.
