Today, October 12, 2021, we join with Chief Ricardo Bharath Hernandez and the Santa Rosa First Peoples Community in celebrating First Peoples Recognition Day and Heritage Week activities in Trinidad and Tobago.
In 1990 the Santa Rosa First Peoples Community gained recognition as being “representative of the Indigenous Amerindians of Trinidad and Tobago” and ten years later, an official Day of Recognition was granted to them. This year marks its 21st year of commemoration.
The theme of this year’s observances is “Respect and Honour to the First Peoples.” For the second consecutive year, observances in Trinidad and Tobago are being scaled down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Celebrations commenced this morning when traditional rituals were carried out by the First Peoples Community at the Red House in Port-of-Spain. Tomorrow morning, a Water Ritual will be performed at the Arima River and on Thursday October 14, the Day of Recognition, a Smoke Ceremony will take place in the morning at the historic Hyarima Monument, in Arima.
Today, let us celebrate our First Peoples and their contribution to Trinbago’s heritage and cultural richness.
