The 3.5 year project saw the implementation of an integrated strategy with a series of workshops and activities aimed at reinforcing the capacity of Belize, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago to safeguard their intangible cultural heritage. To this end, it included:

(i) policy advice,

(ii) workshops on the implementation of the Convention,

(iii) workshops on community-based inventorying and

(iv) pilot inventorying activities.

Through the activities generated by the project, the countries have enhanced their knowledge of the Convention and its mechanism and are better equipped to meet their obligations and to continue the work towards developing sustainable initiatives for the safeguarding of their living heritage. More specifically, the project has resulted in: the development of an action plan for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage in the respective countries; the establishment of focal institutions and the development of a lively stakeholder forum with on-going sharing of information between communities and groups at the national level and between countries at the sub-regional level; the mobilization of community members and governmental and non-governmental representatives who have acquired the key concepts and skills of community-based inventorying in line with the principles of the Convention; and the development of an inventorying framework for future inventorying work in all three countries. In addition, the guidance provided to Belize and Jamaica throughout the culture policy review process has enabled national stakeholders to identify gaps and the necessary framework required to among other things, safeguard intangible heritage.
