CARIFESTA XI was held from 16 to 25 August 2013 in Suriname under the theme “Culture for Development: celebrating our diversity and promoting the central role of culture in economic, social and human development.” The Festival attracted participants and visitors from CARICOM Member States and Associate Members, from UNASUR countries, Latin America, the wider Caribbean and Diaspora countries. In accordance with the CARIFESTA Strategic Plan, endorsed by CARICOM Heads of Government in 2004, the Festival introduced new elements, namely the Caribbean Market Place for the Arts, Animation and Anansi.
The Caribbean Market Place for the Arts component focuses on providing opportunities for Caribbean artists to showcase their work, and make professional contacts that will facilitate international exposure and professional development. At CARIFESTA XI about fifty Caribbean artists (instrumentalists, vocalists and dancers) met with international festival managers, arts presenters and investors from Europe, the United States and Canada in a setting of panel presentations, showcase performances and business meetings.
Animation and new media technologies are recognised as having great potential to facilitate the development of a new cultural industry in the Region. With the introduction of Animation and Anansi in CARIFESTA XI about hundred youth benefitted from workshops in 2D and 3D animation and learned how to include storytelling, music, dance, drama and literature into this new art form. The symbol of the trickster spider Anansi and other folklore figures were used in demonstrating the potential for the development of Caribbean stories to transfer knowledge to the younger generation in an effort to safeguard the region’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
The next edition of the Festival, CARIFESTA XII, is scheduled for 2015 and will be hosted by Haiti.
