The annual celebration of Dominica’s Independence is one of the main festivals in the country, with activities taking place all over the island.
Independence activities generally begin some weeks before November and continue until Independence Day (November 3) and the National Day of Community Service (4 November).
Most activities take the form of competitions based on the island’s main artistic expressions, basically in the performing arts, which include traditional dances such as the Bèlè, Quadrille, Flirtation, Heel and Toe, Mazook and Waltz. There are also competitions in bamboo flute, jing-ping music, string bands, patwa songs, creative dance, short story writing, art and poetry.
Independence celebrations also include the award ceremonies of popular contests, Heritage Day in a specific community, Creole Day on the last Friday of October, the Miss Wob Dwiyet Pageant, the Creole in the Park, the World Creole Music Festival, and National Independence Day properly speaking, with the National Parade of Uniformed Groups and the Cultural Gala.
Independence celebrations usually have a special theme and Dominicans take pride in wearing their national costumes, which consist in the Wob Dwiyèt and Jip for the ladies, and white shirt, black pants and red sash for the men, with either a madras waistcoat, a madras band over the shoulder or a madras jacket.
Dominica gained its independence from Great Britain on 3 November 1978.
