Amerindian Heritage Month 2022

From 01 to 30 September 2022
Place Guyana Throughout the country
Amerindian Heritage Month is an annual observance that is held every September in Guyana in honour of Guyana's indigenous peoples. On 10 September 1995, Guyana's Prime Minister, Cheddi Jagan, officially designated September as Amerindian Heritage Month, in memory of Stephen Campbell's achievement: to become Guyana's first Amerindian Member of Parliament, 10 Septembe 1957. That day is still celebrated as "Heritage Day".

The official opening of Amerindian Heritage Month celebrations takes place at the Umana Yana on the first day of September. Every year a 'Heritage Village' is selected, which becomes the focus of festivities, particularly on 10th September.

This year’s heritage month is being celebrated under the theme ‘‘Celebrating our traditional culture while building One Guyana’.
