UNESCO to participate in seminar and workshop in Chile on illicit trafficking of cultural heritage

10 June 2015/ UNESCO Offices in Santiago and Montevideo

The seminar “Control and prevention of the illegal trade of Chilean heritage properties” and the workshop “Identification of Heritage Properties, Control and Prevention of their Illegal Trade” will be organised by the Department of Libraries, Archives and Museums (DIBAM), together with the Chilean Council of National Monuments, the Caldera municipality and the city’s Paleontological Museum, with the collaboration of the UNESCO Montevideo Office. The events will be held on 11 and 12 June at Caldera’s Cultural Centre.

The seminar is aimed at contributing to the protection of cultural and natural heritage in the region of Atacama, which is protected by Decree Nº 17.288 on National Monuments, as well as by the 1970 UNESCO Convention. For this purpose, attendees will be trained on how to render effective the protection specified in the current regulations.

At the same time, participants will be instructed on the types of illicit activity affecting cultural property –mainly archaeological and paleontological property–protected by law, and they will be informed of the measures taken in the city of Caldera to protect its cultural heritage, specifically the sites of particular paleontological importance.

The workshop is aimed at building capacities, through theoretical-practical sessions, so participants will be better able to identify movable cultural property from Chile, focusing on those properties that may be the object of illicit trafficking, and at disseminating the legal framework for the protection of cultural heritage, in order to prevent and combat crimes against cultural heritage.

The workshop will be conducted with the collaboration of the Cultural Property Documentation Centre and the DIBAM National Conservation and Restoration Centre. It is designed for officials from public institutions, whose work is linked to the protection, control and prevention of the illegal trade of cultural property.
