Colombia’s participation in UNESCO World Heritage Committee ends with a positive balance |

With the closing of the 39th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Bonn, Germany, on 8 July, Colombia reaches the end of its quadrennial mandate as a Committee member with a positive balance.
During this period, the country adopted an international position as a State respectful of the objectives of the UNESCO Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and consolidated itself as a Latin American regional leader in the management of this heritage. This is the third time that Colombia forms part of the World Heritage Committee since the UNESCO Convention was ratified in 1983.
Since the 36th Session of the Committee in Saint Petersburg in 2012, Colombia formed part of the select group of 21 countries which meets each year to monitor the state of conservation of more than a thousand cultural and natural properties inscribed on the World Heritage List and approve new inscriptions on this iconic List.
In addition, the country achieved important results with the inscription of the Qhapaq Ñan - Andean Road System on the World Heritage List (38th Session in Doha, Qatar, in 2014) and the removal of Los Katíos National Park from the List of World Heritage in Danger (39th Session, in Bonn, Germany, in 2015).
The Colombian cultural and natural properties inscribed on the World Heritage List are: the historic sites of Port, Fortresses and Group of Monuments, Cartagena, and the Historic Centre of Santa Cruz de Mompox, the natural parks Los Katíos National Park and the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, the San Agustín Archaeological Park and the Archaeological Park of Tierradentro, the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia and the Qhapaa Ñan, Andean Road System.
The outstanding participation of Colombia as a State Party in the UNESCO World Heritage Committee was possible thanks to the strong commitment of the Ministry of Foreign Relations, the Ministry of Culture, the Natural National Parks and the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICANH), in addition to the participation of a vast group of specialists, technicians, managers and representatives of different non-governmental organisations, of academia and Colombian civil society.
The Colombian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO is presided over by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, María Ángela Holguín Cuellar, and its Executive Secretariat is managed by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Commission is also constituted by the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (COLCIENCIAS), and the Colombian Presidential Agency of International Cooperation (APC Colombia).
