UNESCO praises Peru for the management and conservation of Machu Picchu, Chan Chan and the Historic Centre of Lima |

The international organism praised the effort shown by the state of Peru to face the threats and prevent the deterioration of these sites inscribed on the World Heritage List

UNESCO praised the commitment and effort shown by the state of Peru in the management and conservation of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, the Chan Chan Archaeological Zone and the Historic Centre of Lima, which has enabled it to deal successfully with threats and prevent the deterioration of these sites inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The congratulation of the intergovernmental agency was highly appreciated by the Peruvian delegation, presided over by the Deputy Minister of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Industries of the Ministry of Culture, Juan Pablo de la Puente Brunke, who participated in the 39th Session of the World Heritage Committee, which took place from 29 June to 8 July in the city of Bonn, Germany.
At the meeting, the Committee highlighted the important progress made in Machu Picchu by the Ministry of Culture and the National Service of State-Protected Areas (SERNANP), with the support of other public and private institutions, who committed themselves to implement UNESCO recommendations to protect and achieve the sustainability of the conservation of the Sanctuary.
Committee members also praised Peru for having installed an operative and sustainable management system to address the threats and deterioration factors relative to Chan Chan, as well as the measures implemented to face the threats posed by the El Niño phenomenon, within the framework of the ENSO 2014-1015 Prevention Programme.
The Committee has requested a report on the state of conservation of this site and the progress made in implementing the recommendations to be examined at the 40th Session in 2016. If Peru continues to apply this successful conservation strategy, Chan Chan could be withdrawn from the List of World Heritage in Danger.
With regards to other themes, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee also adopted the Statement of Outstanding Universal Value of 6 Peruvian sites (Historic Centre of Arequipa, Huascarán National Park, the Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Pampas of Jumana, Manú National Park, Río Abiseo National Park and the Qhapaq Ñan Andean Road System), a substantive document for the inscription of cultural and natural properties on the World Heritage List, since it establishes and substantiates its essential and outstanding values as being unique in the world, granting them the category of World Heritage.
It should be recalled that Peru was elected as a member of the World Heritage Committee for the 2013-2017 period. It was thus given the enormous responsibility, shared by 20 other countries constituting this UNESCO governing body, to evaluate and recommend the most pertinent measures to ensure the protection and conservation of the sites inscribed on the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, which presently amount to 1,034.
In this 39th Session the States Parties members of the World Heritage Committee examined the different issues relative to the implementation of the UNESCO 1972 Convention, among them, the state of conservation of the 48 sites inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger and the 92 sites inscribed on the World Heritage List. Likewise, 23 new nominations submitted by different States Parties to the Convention were inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The delegation of Peru in Germany was constituted, in addition, by Ambassador José Manuel Rodríguez Cuadros, Permanent Delegate of Peru to UNESCO; Ana María Hoyle, General Director of Cultural Heritage and Director of World Heritage Sites of the Ministry of Culture; Ricardo Ruiz-Caro, Director of the Department of Culture in Cuzco; Pedro Gamboa, head of SERNANP; Marcos Pastor, Technical Advisor of the Presidency of SERNANP’s Governing Board; José Carlos Nieto, Head of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu-SERNANP; and Minister Counsellor Augusto Bazán, Alternate Representative of the Delegation of Peru to UNESCO.
