Luthiery courses begin at the Central House of Popular Culture |

Professional training workshops, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, at Villa 21-14

The free Luthiery professional training courses that began on Tuesday, 8 September, at the Central House of Popular Culture, Villa 21-24, were well attended and enthusiastically received.
This initiative is the result of the joint work carried out by the nation’s Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, and the Argentine Association of Luthiers (AAL). The workshops, based on the introductory programme by luthiers and musicians of the Ministry of Culture titled “Antes fue Árbol” [It used to be a tree], offer an introduction to the principles of Luthiery.
Present during the first class were House Director, Mario Gómez, the general coordinator of the workshops, Eugenia Nogueira, and the coordinador of the “Antes fue Árbol” programme, Andrea Llama.
The course, coordinated by professors Facundo Soto and Silvia Spina, from the AAL, is given in Tuesdays, from 1-5 p.m., and Wednesdays, from 4 to 8 p.m., and 30 students are already enrolled. The programme provides both theoretical training on tuning, wood technology, artistic design and expression, and practical sessions on the use of tools for building and repairing musical instruments.
Gómez described this initiative as a dream-come-true, “I am very happy and proud of the fact that during my humble direction, this workshop is being conducted, which is the beginning of a much more ambitious undertaking. I hope someday we shall be able to count with a factory of musical instruments at Villa 21-24. And he added, “As always happens, it will be difficult at first, but it is very gratifying that the State has already thought about this neighbourhood as a cultural venue and is giving us tools to help us grow”.
Nogueira, who was in charge of welcoming the participants, said that for the Central House of Popular Culture, the Luthiery Workshop was an outstanding debt because the trade, in addition to being an art, is a working tool that can give many musicians the possibility of making their own instruments”.
“Today, thanks to the efforts of Minister Teresa Parodi and the public policies jointly developed by various State agencies, Luthiery is playing a central role, which is vital if the Argentine industry is to compete on the national and international market,” declared the coordinator of these courses.
In turn, Llama expressed that the Ministry is working hard “so that Luthiery may become once again a nationwide trade and a strong working tool”. In his closing remarks he stressed, “We are taking on the difficult task turning our musicians into professionals and developing the national music industry so that in the future we can sell top quality musical instruments made in our country.”
