Announcing the winning Latin American projects of the 2015 Call for photo and video projects to safeguard ICH

After several weeks of intense work, the International Jury of the 2015 Call for Photo and Video projects to safeguard Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) selected the winning projects in the different categories. The final evaluation of the participating projects was made after a first stage of national evaluations made with the support of the 15 member countries of the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Latin America (CRESPIAL).
A total of 111 projects were submitted (78 in the Video category and 33 in the Photo category) by the 15 member countries of the Centre: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. After the national evaluation stage, 24 projects remained as finalists, which were in turn evaluated by the international jury.
The jury was composed of three ICH specialists:
Christian Báez Allende (Chile). Bachelor in History and Aesthetics, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile; Master’s degree in History, University of Santiago de Chile and Doctor in History, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Chilean academician and researcher, his activity focuses on areas relative to the representations of the indigenous world in America, Cultural Heritage and Rock. At present he is the head of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Section of the Cultural Heritage Department of the Chilean National Council of Culture and the Arts (CNCA).
David Salamanca (Peru). Peruvian documentalist and photographer; has worked in television since 1998. He has worked in Peruvian TV channels in the press and production areas. At present he is an audiovisual filmmaker in the Intangible Heritage Department of the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, for which he has directed several documentaries on cultural heritage themes. For his most recent documentary, Woxreküchiga, the puberty ritual of the Tikunas, he received an award in the Young Directors category of the prestigious 2015 Espiello, Ethnographic Documentary International Festival.
Susana Salerno (Paraguay.) Social entrepreneur dedicated to Culture and Development initiatives. Master’s degree in Cultural Management: Music, Theatre and Dance, Complutense University of Madrid; Master’s degree in Cultural Management: Heritage, Tourism and Nature, José Ortega and Gasset University Research Institute (Madrid, Spain), Euro-American Campus of Cultural Cooperation; ICH courses organized by UNESCO and CRESPIAL. With experience in design and development of indigenous, rural and urban art projects in public and private agencies, NGOs, at local, national and international levels, as well as universities and capacity-building spaces. Participates in various cooperative endeavours on creative and collaborative economy.
The invaluable work of this Jury was complemented with opinions and contributions of ICH specialists of the CRESPIAL Team. Gabriela Valenzuela, head of the Centre’s communication area, was in charge of coordinating the Contest.
Each of the winning projects will be awarded US $ 4,000 (four thousand US dollars). Two funds will be granted for photography projects, and two funds for video projects. The winners are listed below.
