Recovering the Dance of the Giants – Guatemala

2 October 2015/ CRESPIAL

On 30 September the Giants of Sacatepéquez performed at the San Jerónimo Fair, in Baja Verapaz. The Guatemalan Ministry of Culture and Sports, together with the civil society and the local municipality, are working on a project to recover the Dance of the Giants so that it will not disappear from the region and from Guatemala. For this reason, they performed for the first time in this municipality, at the same time honouring Saint Jerome on his feast day.

The contribution of the Ministry of Culture and Sports came as the result of a meeting with municipal and local authorities where they reflected on the importance of having a municipal government with cultural pertinence.

For three months, consultation processes took place and two workshops were held to recover the historical memory of the municipality on the existence of the giants of the region, as described in Popol Vuh, where the giants of Zipacná and Cabracán are mentioned.
