Capacity building for inventorying and safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ecuador continues |

As part of the implementation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Project, financed by the Japanese Funds-in-Trust, the Culture Sector of the UNESCO Office in Quito and Cluster Office to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, with the technical support of Ecuador’s National Cultural Heritage Institute (INPC), the capacity-building workshops on community-based inventorying continue.
The second workshop will be held in the city of Riobamba, in the province of Chimborazo, from 24 to 29 August 2015, and the third will be conducted in the province of Loja, from 2 to 7 September 2015.
Both workshops will be attended by representatives of the community, the local governments and by officials of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage and the National Cultural Heritage Institute (INPC) of Ecuador. Also participating from the province of Chimborazo, will be artisan stonecutters, craftspersons who bear the oral tradition of Zápara culture and of Qhapac Ñan –the Andean Road System–, as well as representatives of the municipalities of Alausí, Chambo, Chunchi, Colta, Cumandá, Guamote, Guano, Pallatanga, Penipe and Riobamba, which are characterized by having the greatest concentration of indigenous peoples and nationalities in Ecuador.
The third workshop will count with 25 representatives from the communities of the Saraguros and Shuar peoples, in addition to the representatives of the local governments of Calvas, Catamayo, Chaguarpamba, Gonzanamá, Loja, Olmedo, Paltas, Puyango, Quilanga and Zapotillo.
The thematic programme of both workshops includes the rights and obligations of the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the free prior and informed consent, codes of ethics and the elaboration of participative inventories, video and photographic recording techniques and the conduction of interviews.
Mr Fabián Bedón, Projects Coordinator of UNESCO Quito and Cluster Office to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, together with Ms María Ismenia Toledo, UNESCO Consultant, will be the facilitators of the 2003 Convention.
Communicator and photographer, Mr Omar Arregui, will teach registration techniques. Ms Karina Fonseca from the INPC will deal with public policies and the national context for the management of inventories in Ecuador.
The practical registration exercises will be carried out in the communities of Guano and Calpi, in Chimborazo, and in the community of Malacatos, in Loja, which will include registration activities and interviews with the bearers of oral tradition and knowledge relative to the nature and universe of the region.

The Oral Heritage and Cultural Manifestations of the Zápara People were inscribed on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009; the Qhapac Ñan/Andean Road System was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2014.
