From 27 to 29 October, the Cuban city of Camagüey is hosting the First International Symposium on Archaeological Heritage, Identity and Protection under the auspices of the Havana-based Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The event was organised within the framework of the project “Protection and Management of Underwater and Coastal Cultural Heritage for Job Creation in Santiago de Cuba”, funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and coordinated by the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture, together with the CNPC, CUBASUB and the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO, among other national institutions, with the support of the AECID Technical Office in Cuba.
Its core objective is to provide a look at heritage and archaeology from the perspective of cultural plurality. The symposium welcomes specialists from Argentina, Colombia, Spain, the United States and the host country, as well as representatives from the Cuban cities of Havana, Trinidad, Sancti Spíritus, Holguín, Santiago de Cuba and Camagüey, the city where the event is being held.
There will also be a specialised visit to Fort San Hilario, an archaeological site in Camagüey located in Santa Lucía Beach, which will include an underwater dive in the archaeological area known as “Las Anforas”, in the domestic zone of the enclave.
The event supports the outstanding work done the Office of the City Historian of Camagüey to protect underwater heritage, which forms part of the efforts of Cuba’s National Cultural Heritage Council to design a national strategy for the implementation of the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.
Located in the central-eastern part of the island, the city of Camagüey was one of the first townships founded in Cuba, and its historic centre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008.
