29 September 2023/ UNESCO Havana/Portal for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean
The spof UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, Olga Rufins Machin, is representing UNESCO at the 3rd International Meeting of Caribbean Carnivals, taking place in Barranquilla, Colombia, on 28 and 29 September 2023.
The also coordinator of the Portal of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean (www.lacult.unesco.org) presented the paper "Living heritage and sustainable development" at the opening session of the event.
It also addressed the importance of recognising culture as a global public good, with an intrinsic value in facilitating and fostering sustainable development.
Barranquilla, city of the Carnival of the same name inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity, is once again hosting the Caribbean Carnival Meeting, this time under the central theme "Innovation: The power of transformation of carnivals".
The event brings together researchers, entrepreneurs, creators, students, operators of festivals, fairs, celebrations, organisers of Carnivals of the Caribbean and the World, as well as members of the value chain that makes up the ecosystem of festivals and celebrations of Barranquilla, Colombia and the Caribbean, who will learn about experiences, success stories and other tools applicable to their celebrations, dynamics and / or their cultural organisations.
