23 October 2012/ UNESCO Havana/Portal of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean
The Máximo Gómez rural community in Perico, a municipality in Matanzas province that is considered a reference site for the practice of "repentismo" (improvised musical versification) in Cuba, has given its oral and written consent to have its cultural expression inventoried at Cucalambé Homes by participants in an Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventorying Workshop. The consent was sought at a warm meeting held at the Guanayabo Cultural Centre, which was attended by specialists of the National Cultural Heritage Council (CNPC) and of local Houses of Culture, as well as by representatives of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The so-called Cucalambé Homes, which have been named after Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo (the Cucalambé), the greatest exponent of decima (ten-line stanza) in the 19th century on the island, are family houses which foster indigenous traditions that associate Spanish roots with contemporary ways of expression. They organize typical parties, decimas, controversias (forms of declamation), singings and serenades on a regular basis.
Established on June 15, 1993, the Cucalambé Homes Movement is made up of 24 families that actively participate in village celebrations such as birthday parties, cultural and political activities, religious ceremonies and funeral rites.
The ICH inventorying exercise will be conducted under a project seeking to strengthen national capacities in States Parties to the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). The initiative was launched thanks to the generous contribution made by the Kingdom of Norway to the ICH Fund. Aimed at helping communities keep their heritage alive, the project will make it possible to make interviews, videos, photos, and maps.
