The Workshop SIDACULT EDUCATION For the first time an approach to the Cuban audiovisual through gender concluded in the Hotel Jagua, in Cienfuegos. The workshop, this time dedicated to the professors of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network, with the concept of a new and unique strategy for the development of pilot projects aimed at approaching other topics in gender equality and equity and integrating HIV/AIDS to the education universe in Cuba through the audiovisual.
This is the first experience implemented by UNESCO in Havana through the SIDACULT programme with the participation of 24 professors from nine educational centers from the country. The main objective of the training was to develop the professors’ skills to deconstruct the aesthetic and semiotic codes of audiovisuals and use them to analyze concepts related to gender and HIV/AIDS.
Experts and representatives from institutions and agencies connected to the Ministry of Education of Cuba and specifically in Cienfuegos, as well as local journalists participated actively in the first theoretical sessions.
As part of the practical part of the workshop, an open discussion on the film Boleto al Paraíso (Ticket to Paradise), by Cuban filmmaker Gerardo Chijona, was held. The debate, moderated by well-known film critic Jacqueline Venet also had the participation of the awarded filmmaker Léster Hamlet, and gave professors the chance to learn how to moderate a debate through an audiovisual.
For the closing of the workshop, and within the framework of the actions implemented by UNESCO to promote campaigns against gender-related violence and violence against women, Cuban artist Rochy Ameneiro premiered, together with the outstanding Cuban artist Omara Portuondo the song Todas Contracorriente, composed by an artist from Pinar del Río.
The event had a lot of press coverage, both in the territory and at the national leven, and counted on the participation of the specialist form the UNESCO Havana Office Leire Fernández, Coordinator of the SIDACULT Programme, in the Information News Magazine Perlavisión, the provincial TV Broadcaster in Cienfuegos. Press coverage was comprehensive and several newspapers and information agencies, such as Prensa Latina, the local newspaper of Cienfuegos 5 de septiembre, radio stations Radio Rebelde (national) and Radio Ciudad del Mar (provincial) covered the event.
