The International Seminar on "Underwater Archaeology: approaches and perspectives" is organized by the INPC (Instituto Nacional de Patrimonio Cultural) of Ecuador within the framework of activities developed by this South American country in the implementation of the
2001 UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. The Seminar will take place in the Ecuadorian city of Manta, from 24 to 26 October, 2012.
UNESCO Havana’s programme specialist Tatiana Villegas, in charge of the 2001 Convention at the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, has been invited by the INPC. Ms. Villegas will present the 2001 UNESCO Convention and its benefits for the LAC region and as an underwater archaeologist, will talk about
in situ protection, one of the basic principles of the 2001 Convention.
Renowned experts from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spain will participate in the event.
The workshop aims at share information on researches about underwater archaeology and methodologies used at present in the world. It is addressed to professionals involved in the field of underwater archaeology such as anthropologists, archaeologists, historians, sport divers, marine biologists, heritage officials as well as national institutions dealing with maritime affairs and environmental issues.
