CULTRIP is a 5-minute short film of fiction where the four leading characters of a videogame provide key elements to understand and delve into the concepts and definitions of the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
In 2011 the UNESCO Office in Havana began to collaborate with the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños (EiCTV) in the production of audiovisual materials with a high technical quality and rich content to promote the 2005 Convention. Knowing the potential talent of the school’s future professionals, UNESCO proposed its Academic Council to launch a contest to design a promotional video on the convention. The proposal included a workshop given by specialists from the Office on this topic that would facilitate the understanding and assimilation of the contents of the international treaty. The end result was a promotional
30-second video made by a team of widely varied young talents from different countries, where the concepts of the convention were renewed with fresh, highly original language. The same work methodology was applied in another video, this time to promote the celebration of the
International Year for People of African Descent. Both audiovisual materials appeared on Cuban television, in UNESCO’s portals and official sites and its network of field offices.
The following year, encouraged by the success of the first two productions, the Secretariat of the 2005 Convention asked the UNESCO Office in Havana for a new material promoting the 2005 Convention. That is how CULTRIP came into being. The film is conceived as a make-believe videogame where Big Blue, Green Power, Orange Glass and Pink Boots are the heroes that show the importance of promoting creative industries and culture for human development. Young Edel Rodríguez (Mola) is the illustrator who conceived all the characters and, with the help of a creative ten-member team, namely, advisors, producers, scriptwriters, editors and post-producers, created a fun-filled and dynamic audiovisual material. The video constitutes a new and effective promotional product that forms part of an international campaign headed by UNESCO to include culture in the revision of the Millennium Development Goals in 2015.
On June 11 this audiovisual product inaugurated the opening session of the 4th Conference of Parties to the 2005 Convention and was shown immediately after the speech delivered by Mr. Getachew Engida, Deputy Director-General of UNESCO.
