Muchas de las características psicológicas antes mencionadas y otros procesos hacen de Los jóvenes una población vulnerable a la infección por el VIH/SIDA. Según ONUSIDA en su informe sobre la epidemia mundial 2002, se calcula que 11,8 millones de jóvenes de 15 a 24 años están viviendo con el VIH/SIDA, además la mitad de todas las nuevas infecciones en adultos-unas 6000 diarias-corresponden a jóvenes.
Datos cuantitativos tomados del Estudio Nacional de Indicadores de prevención al VIH/SIDA, realizado en Cuba en el 2001, muestra que la población para todos los grupos de edades, conocen las formas correctas de evitar el VIH/SIDA. Este mismo estudio arrojó que un 55, 5 % de las personas entre 15 y 19 años tenían parejas ocasionales, en el grupo de 20 a 24 años el por ciento fue de 34,1 %. El uso del condón con la pareja ocasional en el grupo de 15 a 19 años fue de 18,2 % y en el de 20 a 29 años 34,9 %.
