The Afroperuvian Museum is located in the city of Zana, a village of African roots situated south of Chiclayo in the state of Lambayeque. It comprises of 5 exhibition rooms and a collection of antique wagons. The first two rooms exhibit photographs, watercolors, paintings, drawings and manuscripts which sketch the history and presence of afrodescendents in Peruvian culture. The third room is dedicated to a valuable collection of Afroamerican music and musical instruments.
The work section displays utensils used in urban and rural production and a unique collection of black craftwork. Finally, the torture section shows instruments used to punish men and women in the era of slavery.
An intercultural "Afro-Indígenous" Hall has also been inaugurated recently, probably the first of its type in Latin America.
Furthermore, the museum exhibits an international collection as it treasures statuettes and masks by artists from Haiti and Cuba. The collection includes representations of Cuban orishas as well. The Afroperuvian Museum has obtained a collection of old records of Afro Cuban music.
This museum is the first of its kind in Peru. It is an institution of living cultures dedicated to the conservation, research and exhibition of the life, languages, literature, history, music and art of Afroperuvian peoples.
