Carnival of diversity: organization, management and creative value of carnivals and festivals in the Caribbean and Europe

5 July 2022/ UNESCO Havana

Carnivals and festivals are among the Caribbean cultural expressions that fuse traditional knowledge, culture and creativity with great benefits to the wider economy. Experience has shown that carnivals and festivals can be drivers of social cohesion, promote cultural tourism and generate income which boosts economies through destination branding and marketing.

In this context, the UNESCO Transcultura programme has joined forces with the Caribbean Festival of Santiago de Cuba, to organize the workshop: 'Carnival of diversity: organization, management and creative value of carnivals and festivals in the Caribbean and Europe', on 5 and 6 July 2022.

The event will bring together national and local actors from Europe and the Caribbean in charge of organizing and managing carnivals and festivals. It will provide a space to reflect on the socio-economic importance of carnivals and festivals, to highlight their role in fostering creativity, enhancing a sense of unity, pride and belonging, and generating income for economic growth.

Furthermore, the event will facilitate dialogue to identify measures to promote carnivals and festivals as mechanisms to enhance integration, cultural exchange, the diversification of tourism and the mobility of artists.

Finally, the workshop aims to strengthen south-south cooperation and networking in the cultural and creative industries sector of performance and celebrations.

The UNESCO programme Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, funded by the European Union, harnesses diversity to build bridges between people and cultures from different linguistic areas. It is based on capacity building and the creation of opportunities through exchange and knowledge transfer for young people in the cultural and creative sectors in the Caribbean.
