A set of beautiful images of the sites inscribed on the World Heritage List of Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic has been on display since November 18 on the gates of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean Office in Havana. The activity is part of the programme carried out by the Office on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972).
The exhibition was organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, the Institut de Sauvegarde du Patrimoine National (ISPAN) of Haiti, the Cuban National Commission of UNESCO (CNCU), the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana and the National Council of Cultural Heritage of Cuba (CNPC).
The director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Havana, Anne Lemaistre, at the opening of the exhibition, highlighted that the World Heritage Convention is the instrument that "enjoys almost universal ratification: 194 States Parties in 2022, of which 167 have at least one property inscribed on the World Heritage List (July 2021).”
She stressed that the exhibition also celebrates the 40th anniversary of the inscription on the List of Old Havana and its Fortification System, Cuba, and the National History Park – Citadel, Sans Souci, Ramiers, Haiti.
The inauguration of the exhibition was attended by a large representation of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Cuba, experts from the newly established Network of Offices of the Historian and Conservator of the Heritage Cities of Cuba, representatives of the Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the United Nations System as well as of the international collaboration, including representatives of NGOs working in the country, and other international and national guests, among them the participants in the 18th International Meeting on the Management of Heritage Cities.
The exhibition consists of an explanatory poster and 22 images, two for each of the heritage sites. Eighteen of them correspond to the nine properties inscribed in Cuba and were taken by the outstanding Cuban photographer Julio Larramendi. Those corresponding to the properties in Haiti and the Dominican Republic were provided by ISPAN and the National Directorate of Monumental Heritage of the Ministry of Culture, respectively.
For 50 years, thanks to the World Heritage Convention, UNESCO has supported States Parties in the identification, protection and conservation of their cultural and natural heritage, with a view to ensuring its transmission to future generations.
To date, 1,154 heritage properties, 897 cultural, 218 natural and 39 mixed, have been inscribed on the World Heritage List in 167 States Parties. Latin America and the Caribbean have a total of 146 properties inscribed on the List: 100 cultural, 38 natural and 8 mixed, in 28 States Parties.
The exhibition will remain open to the public in Havana until early 2023, when it will begin to travel through Cuban territory, in coordination with the Network of Offices of the Historian and the Conservator of Cuban Heritage Cities.
On November 16, in the context of the 18th International Meeting on the Management of Heritage Cities, organized by the Master Plan of the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana, the director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture, Anne Lemaistre, delivered the inaugural Conference of the event, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Convention.
An Open Day of the UNESCO Office, on November 19, also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Convention, in addition to saluting the 75th anniversary of the founding of Cuban National Commission of UNESCO (CNCU).
