2 February 2023/ UNESCO Havana

The UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean contributed to strengthening the technical capacities of the Conservator's Office of the Viñales Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, through the acquisition of technological equipment for that entity, as part of the implementation of the UNESCO Culture programme and within the scope of the activities carried out by the Organization within the UN Cooperation Framework for Sustainable Development in Cuba 2020-2024.

The director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture, Anne Lemaistre, handed over the equipment to the director of the Conservator's Office of Viñales, Arch. Nidia Cabrera Huerta, at a ceremony held at its headquarters in Havana, on 25 January 2023. Also present were the architect Antonio Luis Mena, deputy director of the Master Plan of the Conservator's Office of Viñales, the geographer Danilo Pulido and the landscape architect Dr. Reinaldo Uriarte, both from said Office, as well as the Culture specialist, Olga Rufins Machin and the Programme Assistant, Lenia Gamonal, both from UNESCO's Regional Office for Culture.

This contribution will directly benefit the 17 workers that the Office of the Conservator of Viñales currently has, 4 women and 13 men, 5 of them under 35 years of age, and will directly influence their daily work.

Nidia Cabrera thanked UNESCO for this contribution and described it as an important support not only for the conservation actions carried out in this emblematic Cuban World Heritage site, but also for the implementation process of the activity "Aid of Emergency Post Hurricane in the World Heritage Site Valle de Viñales de Cuba, for the rehabilitation of the Casa de la Cultura Cultural Complex", for which he also takes this opportunity to thank the support of the UNESCO Heritage Emergency Fund and its donors (the Qatar Fund for Development, the Government of Canada, the Kingdom of Norway, the French Republic, the Principality of Monaco, ANA Holdings INC., the Republic of Estonia, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Slovak Republic, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Principality of Andorra, and the Republic of Serbia).
