8 February 2023/ UNESCO Havana
A troupe of 20 artists from the Dominican Republic's national carnival will participate in the parades and activities of the Nice Carnival from 10 to 14 February 2023. The UNESCO programme Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, funded by the European Union, is supporting the presence of this troupe in Nice. It aims to promote the rich cultural diversity of the Caribbean in Europe, as well as fostering professional exchanges between carnival artists from the Dominican Republic, Nice and other regions of the world.
Dominican carnival artists will perform in the grand parade commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Nice Carnival, dedicated to the ‘Treasures of the World’, as well as in the traditional ‘Parade of Flowers’ and ‘Parade of Lights’ on 11 and 12 February.
The Dominican Republic's Carnival is the country's biggest popular festival. Every Sunday in February, the streets of the main cities are filled with colours, masks and costumes. As in the rest of the Caribbean region, Carnival incorporates expressions of Afro-descendant cultures and represents the pride of this mixed heritage. Members of the Dominican Carnival’s Puerto Plata troupe from the north of the country will be participating in Nice.
The Dominican artists, all under the age of 35, will also take part in the professional workshop ‘Young artists as agents of innovation, development and the future of carnivals’ that will be held on Sunday 12 February. Here they will be given the opportunity to exchange with other artists from Nice and Europe. The session will raise awareness of the potential for synergies and collaboration, still untapped, between carnival professionals from the Caribbean and Europe to together build sustainability and increase economic and social revenues.
The Caribbean delegation will also be present on Monday 13 February at the ‘Carnival Village’, with a stand promoting Caribbean carnivals and the UNESCO Transcultura programme. The UNESCO Transcultura stand will serve as a platform for the promotion, through diverse educational and leisure activities, of the intercultural values of Caribbean carnivals in the heart of Nice, France.
