Ten young poets from the Caribbean selected to promote their work at the Paris Poetry Market

18 March 2023/ UNESCO Havana

As a result of a call for young poets from the Caribbean, launched last February under the auspices of the UNESCO programme Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, funded by the European Union, 10 poets between 18 and 35 were selected, out of 252 applications, to present their work at the 40th edition of the Poetry Market (Marché de la Poésie).

This is one of the most important literary events in France and Europe. In its 2023 edition, which will take place from June 7 to 11 in Paris, France, the Caribbean will be the guest of honour of the event, for the first time, as a result of this alliance with the Transcultura programme.

The young poets selected are:

• Ms Taimi Dieguez Mallo, Cuba
• Ms Jacinth Freanna Howard, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
• Ms Kamille Leisha Judith John, Grenada • Ms Cyndi Marshall, Barbados
• Mr Arguens Jean Mary, Haiti
• Mr Ronaldo Elijah Mohammed, Trinidad and Tobago
• Ms Angella O'Brien, Saint Lucia
• Mr Víctor Andrés de Oleo de Oleo, Dominican Republic
• Ms Tanicia Pratt, Bahamas
• Ms Christena Antonia Valaire Williams, Jamaica

Through a programme of activities including public readings of their poems, meetings with publishers and exchanges between authors, young Caribbean poets will be able to expand their professional opportunities and strengthen their networks with key players on the European literary scene. In addition, a special supplement of the Market of letters (Marché des lettres), the main publication of the event, printed in a run of 30,000 copies, will be dedicated to showcasing the work of Caribbean poets. This objective will also be achieved through a stand in the Place Saint Sulpice, in the heart of Paris, dedicated exclusively to the promotion of these young poets.
