UNESCO has made a working visit to the Central American country to support the formulation of a request for international assistance for safeguarding its intangible cultural heritage in response to a request from Nicaragua.

The country has asked UNESCO for support to formulate a proposal to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Fund. This fund is an international assistance mechanism established by the 2003 Convention on Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The objective is to present a project to carry out inventories of cultural manifestations and strengthen the capacities to safeguard these elements at the national and local levels.

To support this work, Mrs. Eva Martínez, anthropologist and facilitator of the 2003 Convention, has visited towns where there are outstanding live manifestations of culture, such as the San Sebastián festivities in Diriamba, the "Gritería" in León and El Viejo, the celebrations around San Jeronimo in Masaya and the "May Pole" in the Caribbean city of Bluefields.

During this field visit, she sustains a meeting with the technical team in charge from the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture, as well as with authorities from each community and with people who are owners of and knowledgeable about the elements of the local living heritage. This process allows knowing first-hand the expectations and interests of the communities about the request for international assistance and incorporating them into the process of designing and preparing the proposal.

The Intangible Cultural Heritage is the set of intangible cultural elements, including oral traditions, festive events, practices, and knowledge about nature, the universe, and with knowledge of the techniques linked to traditional crafts and others.

This heritage plays a role in maintaining the social fabric. Also, it commits to the Sustainable fulfillment of multiple objectives of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations for Development.
