The exhibition 50th anniversary of the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972) was inaugurated in the Dominican Republic on August 27, 2023, within the framework of the 25th Santo Domingo International Book Fair (FILSD 2023).

The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Culture of the Dominican Republic, Milagros Germán, the Vice Minister of Cultural Heritage, Gamal Michelen, the Secretary General of the Dominican National Commission for UNESCO, Jesús Paniagua, the Communications Officer for the Development of the United Nations System in the Dominican Republic (ONURD) on behalf of the Resident Coordinator, Yanela Zapata, and the programme assistant of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean in the Dominican Republic, Franklin Tejeda, among other personalities.

During the presentation, the purpose of exposing the images within the framework of FILSD 2023 was highlighted to make its visitors aware of the importance of safeguarding cultural and natural heritage. Likewise, the great significance of half a century of the Convention was underlined, since, through it, UNESCO has supported States parties in the identification, protection and conservation of heritage. A true commitment to guarantee this legacy to the next generations.

The exhibition, open to the public in the lobby of the "Eduardo Brito" National Theatre in the Dominican capital, consists of an explanatory poster and 22 images, two for each of the heritage sites of the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Haiti.

In addition to the original sample of emblematic images of the world heritage sites of the Latin Caribbean countries attended by the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture, there are 6 illustrations created by the renowned Dominican visual artist and muralist Norkelly Acosta, which represent the major areas of work of the new United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023-2027, signed between the Dominican government and the United Nations System.

Those corresponding to the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, a Dominican world heritage site inscribed in 1990, were provided by the National Directorate of Monumental Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic. The eighteen images corresponding to the 9 properties inscribed in Cuba were taken by the prominent Cuban photographer Julio Larramendi and those of the National Historical Park - Ciudadela, Sans Souci, Ramiers, a world heritage site in Haiti, were provided by ISPAN - Institut de Sauvegarde du Heritage National.

The exhibition was inaugurated in Havana in November 2022, on the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Convention, and in 2023 it began its tour of the heritage cities of Cuba in the city of Cienfuegos, which will later continue after its exhibition in the Dominican Republic.
