The exhibition "Living Heritage in Latin America and the Caribbean" includes images of elements inscribed by States Parties of the region on the Lists of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Organised jointly with the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO and the National Council for Cultural Heritage of Cuba, the opening of the exhibition was the central activity of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture on the 20th anniversary, which was celebrated on 17 October.

The celebration, which takes place within the framework of the Day of Cuban Culture, also included the exhibition of two of the instruments used by one of the Cuban expressions inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2008, "La Tumba Francesa" (French drum), both of great heritage value, as well as the performance of the National Folkloric Choir of Cuba, prestigious group that cultivates another of the Cuban expressions inscribed on the List, "Rumba in Cuba, a festive combination of music and dances and all the practices associated" and a presentation by three representatives of the "Knowledge of the light rum masters", the Cuban expression inscribed most recently, in 2022.

"This is a privileged opportunity for UNESCO, the States Parties to the Convention and all parties directly concerned with the safeguarding of living heritage to join efforts to highlight that this heritage belongs to all, and that it contributes to sustainable development and peace," said the director of the UNESCO Havana Office, Anne Lemaistre, as she inaugurated the exhibition and then emphasized that:

"The anniversary is also an opportunity to reflect on the role of the 2003 Convention in raising awareness of the diversity and richness of intangible cultural heritage and the need to foster international cooperation for its safeguarding."
Anne Lemaistre.

Present at the activity were the honorary president of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, of the Fernando Ortiz Foundation and of the Cuban Committee of the project "The Routes of Enslaved People: Resistance, Freedom and Heritage", Dr. Miguel Barnet Lanza; the president of the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO, Dulce María Buergo Rodríguez and the president of the National Council of Cultural Heritage of Cuba, Sonia Virgen Pérez Mojena, together with a large representation of personalities and directors of Cuban culture, the Latin American, Caribbean, African and European Diplomatic Corps accredited in Cuba, as well as the Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the United Nations System in Cuba, international collaboration organisations and other international and national guests.
