28 November 2023/ UNESCO Havana
On Wednesday 29 November 2023, at 7:00 p.m., on the stage of the theatre of the National Museum of Fine Arts, the outstanding musicians Cherif Soumano (Mali) and Rolando Luna (Cuba) will perform together for the first time.
Mamadou Cherif Soumano, a follower of a family tradition of playing traditional Malian instruments, has found in the kora, an ancestral instrument that combines strings, sheepskin and a structure of wood and gourd, a vehicle for expression. He is perhaps the most gifted kora player of his generation in terms of his ability to improvise and fuse musically.
Cherif, capable of playing almost any style with his atypical instrument, has had an ascending career in the music world, where collaborations with American musicians Marcus Miller (bassist) and Archie Shepp (saxophonist), Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, and Ivorian Ti Ken Jah Fakoly stand out.
Rolando Luna, for his part, is considered one of the most unique and talented musicians of his generation. He comes from a classical background, which he expanded after having explored a wide range of musical genres in his time with Cuban salsa and timba groups, the Buena Vista Social Club and through the performance of his own music. Without forgetting his roots, Luna approaches his work with a jazzy, yet contemporary register, which denotes his virtuosity and moves through the influences of Caribbean music and Slavic composers.
Winner of a Latin Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Album, Luna has collaborated with numerous national and international artists, among them the French Lebanese Ibrahim Maalouf, the Americans Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, as well as the Cubans Yaroldy Abreu, Rodney Barreto, Rubén González and other emblematic figures of the Buenavista Social Club.
This concert promises to be a feast of harmonies, a moment of confluence and fusion between the singularity of the kora and piano chords, between the African essence and the Cuban essence.
The event, co-organised by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, is part of the concert programme of the international music festival Habana Clásica, now in its fifth edition.
Habana Clásica, which has become a cultural event in the Cuban capital, has been committed, since 2017, to musical excellence, linking new and renowned figures, the fusion of artistic expressions, while it has become the architect of important academic exchanges.
