Within the framework of the 197th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, during the general debate, Mr Hao Ping, President of the General Conference, in taking the floor, acknowledged the work of Cuba in heritage safeguarding and conservation, as well as the necessary and important work done by the Havana-based Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In this regard, he highlighted its symbolism since it was the first office created outside UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and has continued its work nonstop until the present. He remarked that he was very impressed with the bibliographic and documentary collection of the Office, which treasures unique copies of UNESCO documents, and with their degree of care and conservation. He particularly praised the conservation of the first issues of the UNESCO Courier, the emblematic publication of the Organization.
Mr Hao Ping, who is in addition the Vice-Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China, was on an official visit to Cuba from 29 to 30 September, during which he had a cordial exchange with the acting Minister of Foreign Relations of Cuba, Marcelino Medina González. Cuba’s active work in safeguarding heritage and the excellent state of the bilateral relations between both countries, particularly between its National Commissions for UNESCO, were some of the topics addressed.
