On 27 March the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean was honoured with the visit of Mr Stephen Lashley, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth of Barbados, on the occasion of his official visit to the Republic of Cuba. A cordial meeting took place between the delegation headed by the Minister and Fernando Brugman, Officer in charge of the Havana office, and colleagues.
During the meeting, Minister Lashley expressed the interest of his country to continue protecting, conserving and restoring the World Heritage property of Historic Bridgetown and Its Garrison, and to foster its promotion through an interpretation centre. Mr Lashley requested UNESCO to accompany the country in these efforts.
Brugman informed on the adoption, November last, of the Caribbean Action Plan for World Heritage, and the active contribution of Barbados to it. One of the Plans' main priorities is risk management, a subject that the Minister recalled had been studied previously in Barbados and would continue to be a priority, also in relation to measures to prevent the effect of climate change.
The distinguished visitor also expressed their willingness to continue advancing in the management of museums, archives and libraries in the country. In this regard, Brugman informed that UNESCO is currently working on a special declaration on museums, and asked for Barbados contributions to that draft document.
The possibility to develop a joint project in Cuba in the framework of the International Decade for People of African Descent and the UNESCO Slave Route programme was raised. The project, which refers to the ancestors of Barbados and its contribution to the Cuba's cultural diversity today, will be implemented in close cooperation with the Embassy of Barbados in Havana.
The Minister was accompanied by Ms Ruth Blackman and Mr Stephen Rowe, Permanent Secretary and Sports Development Officer, respectively, of the Ministry; as well as by Ms Andrea King, Head of the Barbados Cultural Industries Development Authority. They were accompanied by officials of the Cuban National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), the institution that hosted the delegation of Barbados during its visit to Cuba.
