18 November 2015/Permanent Delegation of Cuba to UNESCO

Cuba was elected member of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee this afternoon in the French capital, during the 20th General Assembly of the States Parties to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, inaugurated on Wednesday and in session until 20 November. With a total of 128 votes in favour, Cuba was the country receiving the highest number of votes for the freely contested posts.

Elected for a four-year period, until 2019, Cuba will occupy one of the 21 seats in this Committee, whose mandate is to examine the state of conservation of the sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, decide on the inscription of new sites and the inscription or deletion of properties on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Together with Peru and Jamaica, members elected in 2013, Cuba will represent the Latin American and Caribbean Region.

With nine properties declared World Heritage Sites, Cuba is the country with most inscriptions in the Caribbean region and the fifth in Latin America.

Cuba ratified the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1981, being consistent with the policy promoted by the Cuban state to foster the identification, protection and dissemination of the nations cultural heritage in its broadest sense. The will of the State has shown itself in Cubas adherence to all UNESCO instruments in favour of safeguarding Cultural Heritage.

Cuba is represented at this meeting by Gladys Collazo, President of the National Heritage Council, and Laura Moria, specialist from the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO, together with the Permanent Delegation of Cuba to UNESCO.
