From 23 to 30 November 2015, the Training Course on Underwater Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage Management, jointly organized by UNESCO, the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICANH) and the Terra Firme Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the General Maritime Department, the Colombian Ocean Commission and the Externado University of Colombia, was conducted in the Colombian city of Cartagena de Indias.
Its main objective was to provide participants with the necessary skills to understand underwater cultural heritage, registration and protection methods, and its importance for society and future generations. The course counted with the participation of some 20 professionals and students of archaeology, cultural and heritage management, as well as personnel from the Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research Centre of the Caribbean (CIOH).
This initiative was one of the first activities proposed in the road map adopted by the participants in the Seminar and Panel Discussion on Underwater Cultural Heritage organized on 17 and 18 June 2015 by Externado University and the Terra Firme Foundation in Bogotá, Colombia.
The course combined theoretical classes with practical sessions held at sea and in the pool, following the scientific standards set by the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, as well as those developed based on the UNESCO training courses in Asia and the Pacific region, as well as in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The course was given by outstanding specialists on this theme, such as Dr Arturo Rey da Silva, member of the Secretariat of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage; Dr Carlos del Cairo, teacher-researcher of Externado University (Colombia) and Director of the Terra Firme Foundation; Prof Christopher Underwood, member of the Underwater Archaeology Programme of the National Institute of Anthropology and Latin-American Thought - PROAS-INAPL (Argentina) and the Nautical Archaeology Society (Great Britain); and Dr Ernesto Montenegro, ICANH General Director.
