15 November 2013/UNESCO Havana/Portal of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean
On 16 November 2009 the agreement for the implementation of the project Heritage Recovery and Cultural Development in Havana: Segundo Cabo Palace between the European Union and UNESCO was signed. It is an initiative for multilateral cooperation executed by the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana.
The start of the project coincided with the anniversary of the adoption of the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, in whose List Old Havana and its Fortification System was inscribed in 1982. This Historical Site includes the Segundo Cabo Palace, built in the 18th century.
The project falls within Main Line of Action 1 of the UNESCO Culture programme for the 2012-2013 biennium: Protecting and conserving cultural and natural heritage through the effective implementation of the 1972 Convention. At present, on its fourth anniversary, the project is in its final stage. The progress made in meeting the timetable for the project was observed at a recent visit made by specialists from the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture and the Office of the Historian of Havana.
In 2014, once the Segundo Cabo Palace is restored, the facility will be used as an interpretative centre dedicated to intercultural relations between Cuba and Europe, thereby ratifying the role of culture as a bridge to dialogue and development.
