Cuba welcomes Gerald Clayton with deeply-felt appreciation.

Four Grammy nominations, a vast discography, favourable reviews from specialised critics and his well-earned 32-year fame have not changed his unassuming nature.

The pianist, from the Bronx (New York), visited Havana a few days before the world celebration of International Jazz Day.

During his stay in Cuba, the artist interacted with outstanding national musicians of this unique genre, including National Music Award-winning Bobby Carcassés, saxophonist César López and young talents such as Ruy López-Nussa and Yasek Manzano, with whom he shared his passion for music and participated in impromptu jazz sessions, some held at the artists’ own homes.

The young artist also had a warm get-together with the staff of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, where he was welcomed by its director, Katherine Muller-Marin, who also accompanied him during his visit.

Before leaving, Clayton explained what made this trip different from all the others he has taken, namely, the artistic energy that springs from every street and neighbourhood in Cuba, something that struck him since he was first welcomed.

The possibilities of a forthcoming visit remained open, and, perhaps, even the recording of a new CD in Cuba.
