The Student House of the Enrique José Varona University of Pedagogical Sciences opened its doors to the young students from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz visiting Havana to actively participate in the global celebration of International Jazz Day.

After a warm welcome, the director of University Extension explained to the guests that they would have the opportunity to enjoy the performance of several music groups of the Pedagogical University who, although they are studying to become teachers, also belong to the movement of amateur artists.

She further explained that students from educational institutions throughout the country belong to this movement, which develops their artistic talent and, in so doing, contributes to their professional training.

The programme prepared by the students included the group Brahman, soloist Marco Antonio Santana, accompanied by Mirdiel Silva at the guitar, and the groups Trovana School Project and Jazz Project, with songs from today’s popular music and the Nueva Trova. In turn, teacher and singer-songwriter Yudith, sang a number of her own making and the audience joined in the chorus.

The young students from the Thelonious Monk Institute delighted all those present with their musical journey through the History of Jazz.

The masterful performance of these musicians, from different countries, was received with such a round of applause that they came back on stage to continue with their performance, which ended this time with a number collectively composed by the group.

Future teachers and their professors enjoyed the show, as they danced to Cuban rhythms and to the most democratic of all music on 26 April in celebration of International Jazz Day.

The Pedagogical University’s educational TV team filmed the event and interviewed several participants.

In short, hosts and invitees fused in a warm music session which ended with closing remarks by Dr Daysi Fraga, Rector of the Enrique José Varona University of Pedagogical Sciences, and a tour of the Student House.
