On 28 April, a concert hosted by Cuban percussionist Ruy-López Nussa, brought together mostly young musicians from the island at the Covarrubias Room of the National Theatre of Cuba.
The show forms part of a wide range of activities in honour of the sixth edition of International Jazz Day, which is being celebrated this year in Havana, the global venue of this event.
This outstanding drummer and professor, accompanied by his group, La Academia, invited several of the best jazz musicians in Cuba, including pianist Harold López-Nussa and his quartet, drummer Ruy Adrián López-Nussa, pianist Alejandro Falcón, violinist William Roblejo, percussionist Tomás “El Panga” Ramos, the Osaín del Monte rumba group and maestro Enrique Lazaga.
The concert revealed the mastery of the participating artists who came together in a jam session, the highlight of the show, where the percussion undoubtedly took the lead.
Jazz takes Havana by storm
Traditional jazz spots of the Cuban capital such as La Zorra y el Cuervo and Jazz Café, cultural spaces such as Fábrica de Arte and El Tablao, and La Calle del Jazz, with Pabellón Cuba (venue of the Hermanos Saíz Association) as the centre, played jazz all week, with the presence of international guests who arrived in the Cuban capital to celebrate Jazz Day.
International figures such as Richard Bona, Marcus Miller and Esperanza Spalding, as well as local talents such as Yissi García, Orlando “Maraca” Valle, Eme Alfonso and Ruy López-Nussa joined to fill the Havana night with jazz. They also took part in the activities of the educational programme, where they performed and exchanged experiences in the workshops organised at the University of the Arts and the National School of Art.
The celebration will come to a close on 30 April with the gala concert at the Alicia Alonso Grand Theatre of Havana, where stars from 14 countries, host included, will be participating. The show will be broadcast live worldwide by streaming.
