30 April 2015/CNDU/UNESCO Havana/Portal of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean

The Dominican Republic is hosting a week-long celebration of International Jazz Day. The Dominican National Commission for UNESCO (DNCU), Jazz in Dominicana, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism of the Caribbean nation are in charge of organising the celebration, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy, the Eduardo Len Jimenes Cultural Centre and the spaces Lulu Tasting Bar and Fiesta Sunset Jazz. The official events in the country are produced by Jazz in Dominicana.

Under the slogan Lets celebrate jazz all week long, the programme will begin on Friday the 24th and end on Thursday, 30 April, International Jazz Day, in the spaces Vivo Caf, Lulu Live Sessions and Fiesta Sunset Jazz, respectively.

With the support of the DNCU and the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz, the events are registered as part of the activities organised at the international level as part of this great celebration, which this year is inscribed in the framework of the 70th Anniversary of UNESCO.

The official ceremony commemorating the occasion will take place on 30 April during the special edition of Fiesta Sunset Jazz. Just as in 2012, 2013 and 2014, the event will be an ideal setting to award musicians, producers, radio programmes and figures that have promoted jazz in the country. It will be followed by a concert of the Ramn Vzquez Tro, composed of outstanding jazz musicians from Puerto Rico, and as the special guest, Jazz in Dominicana from the United States.

Activities began on Friday, 24 April, with a concert by the group IH5tet (Isaac Hernndez Quintet) at the Vivo Caf of the Eduardo Len Jimenes Cultural Centre, in Santiago de los Caballeros (north of the country).

On Monday the 27th, the second edition of the Jazzomana Jazz Festival took place at the Palace of Fine Arts, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the countrys oldest radio jazz programme with the participation of the famous Irish jazz vocalist Emilie Conway, considered one of the 10 best female jazz singers in Europe.

Also on 27 April, Lul Live Sessions welcomed the performance of Jordi Masalles & Tiempo Libre.

On Wednesday the 29th, a Jazz Master Class was given by the Ramn Vzquez Trio at the National Conservatory of Music.

The programme ends on International Jazz Day with various activities, including the concert by Sandy Gabriel & Pop Jazz Ensemble, with Pavel Nez as the special guest, given at Independence Square in Puerto Plata, as part of the festivities in honour of St. Philip the Apostle of that Dominican city.
