Seminar on the Slave Trade and Slavery in West Africa

Ghana host a Seminar on the Slave Trade and Slavery in West Africa. It took place in Accra, 11-13 february 2007. This official event commemorated the Bicentenary Abolition of the Slave Trade in the former British colonies and was attended by the UNESCO Director-General, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura.

The objectives were:

• To undertake the inventory, safeguarding and promotion of West African tangible and intangible cultural heritage related to the slave trade and slavery;
• To define criteria for tourism itineraries within the West African region;
• To enforce the network of West African museums related to slave trade and slavery.

The seminar was attended by more than 30 participants including 15 experts from member states of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and selected experts from the International Scientific Committee.
