The objective of the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage is to contribute to the protection and conservation of monuments, compounds and cultural sites, as well as geological and morphological formations, strictly defined natural sites or natural areas with outstanding universal value.
Through its World heritage Centre and field offices, UNESCO works to promote the identification, protection and preservation of the world cultural and natural heritage by strengthening the capacities for protection, conservation and management of these cultural and natural properties and goods towards sustainable development.
