2nd International Seminar on Heritage and Education, Valparaíso, Chile, 28-30 May 2012

This event was jointly arranged by Chile's Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes (National Council for Culture and the Arts), the Centro de Educación Superior Técnico Profesional (DuocUC: Centre for Higher Technical and Professional Education) in Valparaíso and the Centro Regional para la Salvaguardia del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de América Latina (CRESPIAL: Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Culture Heritage of Latin America). With the central theme "The struggle for education", the event was received favourably, as demonstrated by the active participation of more than 230 people interested in the topic, including teachers, students of teaching and cultural managers connected to the field of education.

UNESCO's representative at the Seminar was Mr Fernando Brugman, Coordinator of the Culture Team within the Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean. Mr Brugman opened the Seminar on 28 May with a conference in relation to culture's contribution to development, and the role of both formal and informal education in relation to heritage, and particularly in relation to intangible cultural heritage.

The conference opened with a lively public debate, with many participants exchanging experiences and emphasising the need for education in relation to the preservation and safeguarding of cultural heritage, due to its importance as a symbol of collective identities and a tool for local development, alongside cultural industries.

Researcher Pedro Morgado Clerot, from Brazil's National Institute for Historic and Artistic Heritage presented a master class in relation to "Heritage education in Brazil: challenges of a collective project". Gabriela Valenzuela, CRESPIAL Communications Coordinator, gave a presentation in relation to the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). In addition, Valenzuela, who is also a specialist in photography and visual anthropology, conducted a workshop in relation to "Photographic registers of intangible cultural heritage".

Over the course of the Seminar, the work tables encouraged debate in relation to various good practices that were discussed. Special attention was dedicated to the compilation of inventories of intangible heritage, creating a link between tangibility and intangibility through conservation, and the need for cultural mediation. Other workshops, presented by experts in various disciplines, debated the ways to salvage local history, the use of the city as a place for learning, and in relation to the preventative conservation of wood.

The 2nd International Seminar on Heritage and Education took place within the framework of the programme of activities organised in Chile in relation to World Heritage Day, which is held on 27 May every year in this South American nation, and which this year was dedicated to the relationship between heritage and development.
