Meeting "Cultural Universe of People of African Descent of Latin America". Esmeraldas, Ecuador, 26-28 October 2010

The Meeting of the Project "Cultural Universe of People of African Descent of Latin America" was held in Esmeraldas, Ecuador, from 26 to 28 October 2010, organised by the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Latin America (CRESPIAL), with the support of the National Institute for Cultural Heritage of Ecuador and the Municipal Government of the host city.
The event, which seeks to formulate a regional project for safeguarding cultural heritage in communities of people of African descent with the participation of the civil society, counted with the presence of experts and representatives from organisations of Afro-descendants in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Inés Pazmiño, National Director of the National Institute for Cultural Heritage of Ecuador; the mayor of the municipality of Esmeraldas; as well as CRESPIAL representatives Fritz Nimio Villasante and Gabriela Inés Valenzuela. Representing the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean was Olga Rufins Machín, National Officer of the Culture Programme, and representing the UNESCO Quito Office was Anastasio Mitjans.
CRESPIAL was created on February 2006, after an agreement was signed in Paris by UNESCO and the Government of Peru. It seeks to foster and support actions that safeguard and promote the vast intangible cultural heritage of the peoples of Latin America. The "Cultural Universe of People of African Descent of Latin America" is one of the projects with the greatest potential, since it involves the sum total of its Member States.
